What’s the purpose of this stuff?

This is really a place for me to practice the discipline of writing regularly and to build my WordPress and content creation skills. My hope is the more I blog, the better I’ll get.

Who am I writing for?

It’s really just for me, but if anyone find the content valuable and helpful then that is a bonus.

A Little about my transition to hybrid work

As someone who went into the office for over 27 years, the transition to a hybrid workplace was not easy. I had grown accustomed to the routine of going into the same office every day and sitting at my designated desk, brewing a coffee from my personal coffee machine, having my stuff permanently on display and exactly as I left them the night before. But as my workplace began to adopt a first-come, first-served approach to desk space, everything changed.

Suddenly, I found myself waking up earlier than usual to ensure that I arrived at the office before my colleagues, just to secure a desk for the day. And while it was a small inconvenience, it was one that required a significant adjustment to my routine. I would justify the early start by telling myself I could do more work, I could beat the traffic, and I could always leave earlier to beat the traffic on the way home. At one point I would be in at five in the morning  every day and leave for home at four in the afternoon every day.

To make matters worse, I often found myself having to take virtual meetings whilst sitting on a couch with a laptop on my lap. It wasn’t the most comfortable setup, and it certainly wasn’t ideal for maintaining my productivity. But it was what I had to work with.

Thankfully, things did start to get better. I made a mental shift. I began working from home one day per week, which meant I could move from the couch and laptop to the dining table. It was certainly a more comfortable setup, but it was still a far cry from what I was used to in the office. Then the Covid 19 pandemic happened and we were forced to work from home full time.

As time went on, I began to realize that if I was going to be working from home more often, I needed to invest in a proper workspace. And so, I bought a desk and external monitors to mimic my old work setup at home.

The transition wasn’t easy, and it certainly required a lot of adjustment. But with time, I’ve come to appreciate the benefits of a hybrid workplace. I have a far better setup today than I ever had at the office. I no longer have to spend time commuting to the office every day, getting stressed about the traffic, and I have the flexibility to work from wherever I want. And while I may not have a designated desk in the office anymore, I’ve come to realize that I value the autonomy of logging on when I want, being able to cook from fresh each day can actually be good for my health and wellbeing.

Overall, the transition to a hybrid workplace has been a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience. It’s taught me to be more adaptable and flexible in my approach to work, and it’s given me the opportunity to explore new ways of working that I never would have considered before. I will be sharing the things I learnt abot setting up a homeworking environment regular plus other related topics along the way.
